Truly, in regards to interior design and decorating, it’s all about the magic and excitement of ambiance. This goes far beyond a look. Do you know what ambiance really is? Let’s check the dictionary. It says we are talking about a mood, character, quality, tone, or atmosphere of an environment. Another definition says ambiance is “that which surrounds or encompasses.”
The above is a good definition. When we create ambiance, no matter what the budget, we need to consider this… “Ladies, how does it feel if you wrap yourself in a nylon wind-breaker versus a mink coat?” You’re the same person in both scenarios, correct? But your emotional feeling, your ambiance, the way you talk, the way you walk… they’re all different. Isn’t that true? So, you put on a different demeanor, in a sense. Better yet, we can say it’s a more expansive demeanor of yourself… correct? That’s what we’re going to be talking about.
I have taken the above definition and expanded on it a little more. Here is My Definition of Ambiance: “Ambiance is the intangible element of an interior that touches the heart, the soul, the mind and the emotions; that is visually appealing, intellectually stimulating, emotionally satisfying, and totally enriching for the occupants and their guests.”
Now, the same magic that creates excitement can also induce calm… so, it can do several things at the same time. It provides a haven and creates a background or backdrop for the occupants and their possessions, so they are the “gems” in their own setting.
So, think of photography. Let’s say that you want to get a portrait of yourself. A photographer that is quite skilled will choose the correct backdrop that really brings out the very best in you. And, like jewelry, you are the gem… the ruby, the emerald, the diamond. We want to position you in such a way that your environment brings out your whole character… your quality, your fire, the color of your personality… because you’re so unique. There’s nobody like you in the whole world! Correct?
So why is ambiance so important? I’ll be quite frank with you. Without ambiance, you end up with basically just “a look.” And a look, to me, doesn’t really incorporate the depth of your personality and character, or other attributes of that nature. It’s rather superficial. And, it doesn’t express the true treasure that’s in you as a unique individual.
So, the big question is “Why do so few people have ambiance?” The number one reason is that people try to follow a trend or fad. Those things come and go, so it’s very easy to eventually get locked into a “time warp”… like a time capsule. It can get outdated at a certain point if you don’t handle things correctly. A lot of things that are perpetuated out there in the furniture and furnishings industry, and even in the fashion and clothing world, are to carry out the idea of constant change. This sustains the selling. There’s nothing wrong with that. Unfortunately, it’s typically done to create in you a continual state of dissatisfaction.
Everybody knows that there are certain things that you look your best in. For example, there are certain cuts of clothing that are more flattering on your figure than others. If that specific cut doesn’t happen to be the fad or trend right now, then where are you? There should be enough out there in the world today that it really shouldn’t matter what the current fad or trend is, especially if it is unappealing, unflattering, or inappropriate for you.
Anybody can look outside and see the beauty of nature throughout all the seasons… spring, summer, autumn, and winter. But, is there a fad for this color or that color in nature? Do you ever hear that red roses are in this year, but next year they won’t be? Isn’t it kind of interesting to contemplate that?
Quite often people try to duplicate interior designs from what they have seen in magazines without a full understanding of a large range of things. One must consider: how does this mesh with my personality, with where I live geographically, with the architecture of my home, the type of home I have, and the lifestyle I live? So, knowing yourself is a very important first step!
